a multi-year student-run project designing, building, and installing a modular outdoor playspace for children of a local shelter. the playspace design was accomplished through and consulted by the team from Horizons for Homeless Children.

This module WAS DESIGNED AND installed on site at a women and children’s shelter run by victory housing programs in Dorchester, MA. though the home already had an indoor playspace for the children, the house’s backyard was the perfect site for a new playspace that engages the outdoors. over the course of three years, the fbd team met regularly with the clients, went on tours of playspace precedents and the site, and formed a program for the module to adhere to. the program was decided to focus on three kinds of play activities that helped young children to develop GROSS motor skills. these activities included a double-sided mirror wall with a balance bar, a picture-matching/tic-tac-toe wall, and a xylophone wall that kids could play with their hands or sticks that they could find in the backyard.

the module was painted in different shades of light blue, in line with our client’s request for trauma-informed design tactics. since the children of this home may be coming from traumatic backgrounds, we had to consider any physical or visual triggers.

THE ENTIRE PROJECT WAS FUNDED THROUGH FUNDRAISING AND GRANT MONEY WON FROM THE AIAS.

THE PROJECT WAS THE WINNER OF THE 2021 AIAS FBD HONOR AWARD.
