originally built on onion fields, marshland, salt meadows, and beachfront, the land was transformed into the impressive course it is today. work on the course began in 1916, with landfill being dredged out of the harbor and topsoil needing to be brought into much of the course.
In 1913, there existed an old onion farm and salt marsh, the land on which the course was built. It was important to the Club that the engagement between clubhouse and land was upheld and accentuated. Rear dining terraces flow on grade directly behind the 18th green and encourage a direct connection between golf and the clubhouse interior.
Beginning as a men’s only organization in the 1920’s, the incorporation of women and family spaces into the Club’s facilities in a substantial way became a critical item of the project’s program list. The architect engaged to provide both architectural and interior design services, used extensive experience with other club work to determine how best to formulate spaces to be inclusive yet defined.
as my first experience with revit, i was in charge of translating the firm’s traditional detailing style from cad. in doing so, i took ownership of the cupola design with a custom finial. i selected the club’s mascot as the weathervane’s imagery, a PILGRIM LINING UP HIS SHOT, AS TO NOT SHY AWAY FROM ACKNOLEDGING THE INHERENT SOCIO-ECONOMIC HISTORIES TIED TO SUCH THINGS AS GOLF COURSES AND COUNTRY CLUBS.
